Australian native Dami Im quickly rose to prominence in her home country with a deserved victory on the fifth season of their version of The X Factor, subsequently releasing three top ten albums and four Top 20 hits, including her chart-topping “Alive” debut single. However, the South Korean-born vocalist saw her star truly shine during the Eurovision Song Contest 2016. Representing Australia with the soaring and rousing “Sound of Silence”, Im eventually placed second overall, the country’s best result thus far.
For the artist’s first official release since her Eurovision appearance, Im continues down the dance/pop path with the endearing and infectious “Fighting For Love”, a track that finds her pushing past the constant stress and pressure, all in the name of her significant other. Supported by a euphoric, energetic beat that consistently climbs and climbs to exciting heights, Im is able to showcase pristine vocal abilities, while luring listeners to the nearest club floor.
Nothing else in the world seems to matter to Im besides satisfying her beating heart, making sure the spark in a relationship never dies out. The songwriting may not be innovative, the sentiment has been heard countless times before, yet the artist finds a touching way to still ring emotion out of every word. “Don't give up, don't give in, when the fear's creeping in, no matter what you think you're facing,” she pleads on one of the verses, before she tackles the chorus with utmost perfection.
Some will say that Im’s venture into the dance/pop realm is a bit tried and dated, but when powerful vocal pipes resonate effortlessly with a message of love and devotion while they get lost in a sea of addictive synths and welcomed beat drops, how could one really complain? Presumably a lead effort from an upcoming, unannounced new album, "Fighting For Love" showcases a different side of Im’s artistic mind and her future career potential.
Those able to witness Im’s impressive feats during Eurovision, her futuristic performance of “Sound of Silence”, were highly anticipating a knockout follow up effort. “Fighting For Love” is not that groundbreaking, instantly-iconic release, but it easily checks all the necessary boxes in the pop genre to vie for mainstream radio attention and could garner her more exposure. Those looking for catchy, meaningful tunes may have found a new talented queen to follow.
