There are ways to survive a rainy day. We knew the forecast was pretty dire today so we made life easy for ourselves. First stop Inveraray Castle, which was a short walk from the hotel. We arrived bang on opening time and had the castle to ourselves. It certainly didn’t disappoint with it’s wonderful Georgian interiors and a baronial hall with enough armaments to fight an enormous battle. Beautifully arranged of course. You will have to wait until our return to sample some of its delights but the top photo gives you a glimpse through the gates, with all the amazing azaleas and rhododendrons in the foreground.
There had been a plan to drive slowly along the north shore of loch fyne. By the time we reached the car the weather had set in for the day. Instead we took a shorter inland route that had us arrive in Oban from the north. A wise decision I guess as the views would have been shrouded in mist. Our drive along Loch Awe and River Awe was still scenic enough. Very little traffic so time to admire the scotch mist in all its glory.
Arriving down Oban’s high street we couldn’t help notice the Phoenix cinema, on our left, looking very much open. A plan was hatched, the car parked and the two of us soon arrived at the door of the cinema to see what was on. Timing couldn’t have been any better if we had tried. Just about to start was the newest Downton Abbey film which we had been meaning to catch back at home. With a bag of sweets to share we sat in their cosy cinema and escaped into the world that is Downton. Not to everyone’s taste, I’m sure, but the perfect remedy to a very wet day.
It was a shock to return to the real world but a little retail therapy on the way to the hotel kept us happy. Now the decision as to where to eat and a quick perusal of the weather forecast. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for tomorrow as we continue our northerly journey. Just a smidge of blue sky would be good.
Back soon,
Barbara xxx
